The tax raised and spent on hospital treatment is completely irrelevant here.
Listen, there are no diseases that are exclusive to smokers, they just raise the chances of contracting them at an earlier age. So whether a smoker develops, lets say, lung cancer at age 65 and a non-smoker at 80, both will need treatment which in turn costs money! So what’s the difference? Plus, if smokers die younger, they cost the state less in care home fees. Smokers are a benefit to the system not a burden!

I’m not sure what the situation is in Australia, but I know that the government relies quite heavily on the tax from alcohol and fags here. I’ve read our NHS would collapse overnight if the two were say illegalised.
