However, I have yet to meet a client who (however many cigarettes a day they smoke) is physically addicted to nicotine. For the lucky ones, the over-riding factor in their addiction is habitual and behavioural. Recognising this and breaking the link is usually enough to set them off on the road to freedom. In essence, the therapy works on the principal of aversion, breaking the habitual associations that go with smoking. These are on the surface behavioural links, but they undoubtedly have an emotional link at their point of origin. It is often enough to recognise the behaviour and see the connection for what it is (or is not!) in order to break the cycle by not wanting to continue.

For some less fortunate, however, the emotional cause that their habit is unconsciously trying to reconnect with can be phenomenally deep-rooted and often further compounded over many years. In these cases, hypnosis is used in a different way, to reach back to that emotional core. Once again, by recognising the association (i.e. seeking the cause), the foundations are laid for breaking the habit.

I once had a client (let us call her Charlotte) who seemed the epitome of will power, determination and success. She had overcome extreme difficulties to reach this place in her life. Yet she could not beat her smoking habit and consequently her own sense of failure pervaded everything, affecting relationships and dominating her thoughts. Using automatic responses under hypnosis (known as Ideo Motor Responses or IMR’s) we were able to go back to infancy and even to the womb. This showed (later confirmed) that during pregnancy, Charlotte’s mother was deeply stressed and unhappy and having to decide whether to have her unborn child adopted. The only moments of calm and connection for the growing Charlotte were when her mother stopped to have a cigarette. Further, it transpired that she was also smoking when the two were finally separated for adoption. For the Unconscious (and at a truly primal level) there was a key link from Charlotte’s smoking back to her lost mother and therefore to her emotional understanding and connections around love and relationships. Acknowledging and releasing this connection finally enabled Charlotte to successfully quit smoking.

Stop smoking hypnotherapy can be an incredibly effective means of changing behaviour, accessing the unconscious and reminding it that the associations it is making emotionally are no longer applicable. Life has moved on and the emotional mind needs help to catch up. Recognising that something is wrong is the key to the desire to change.
