Reasons To Stop Smoking … Paul Knew Them All

By Dave Tishendorf

Paul was aware of all the conventional reasons to stop smoking.

I mean, how could you not be, even in the late 1970s, when he and I first met in a midsized city in southern Oregon. By that time, science had already established the dangers of smoking, and information on how to quit cigarettes was everywhere.

I was a working journalist back then, and Paul (not his real name) drove cab. We quickly became good friends. Over the years, Paul and his partner, Sarah, and my then-partner, now-wife, Mary, and I spent a lot of good times together.

The explanation for this writer/cabbie pairing can be found in the folds of community theater. If you have ever been a member of an amateur theater group in a small town, you know what I mean. Cultural lines are blurred there, if not eliminated altogether. Lifelong friendships are formed.

And sometimes love affairs bloom while the seeds of divorce are sown, and marriages are made or broken.

Paul, in fact, had been married and divorced four times when I met him. In a way that I can’t fully explain, it was part of his charm. He would joke in his low-key way about each of his three grown daughters, and in time we in the group came to use the nicknames he had for each of them, names that had a certain fondness attached to them, even though they can’t be repeated here (they had to do with how the girls were conceived).

It’s not that Paul kept the names a secret from his daughters – that would have required a duplicity he was not capable of. The daughters knew full well what those nicknames were, and they were able to laugh with him. How could you ever become angry with Paul? It was almost impossible.

But if Paul was a loser in the game of love, he was brilliant onstage. This son of a Protestant minister had a lean figure, a deep voice, an aquiline nose and a profile to die for. He could not be called handsome in the Hollywood sense, but when he walked onstage, the effect was striking.

Onstage he was able to draw on the power of whatever demons and angels were residing in his soul. He acted from the inside out.

Paul and I were in several shows together. He was always the star, whether he had a leading role (Henry Drummond in “Inherit the Wind”) or a minor one (Leo Herman, aka Chuckles the Chipmunk, in “A Thousand Clowns”).

Had circumstances been different, had not one of his devils controlled and ultimately destroyed him, he might have been a professional.

As it was, he simply succeeded in being the most gentle person I have ever known.

I think, if Paul had stated his philosophy of life, it would have gone something like this:

“I will judge no one or no one thing. I will accept the flow of life as it comes and not try to change any of it. I will let it take me where it will, neither accepting nor rejecting it. Nothing is good or bad, it simply is. I am merely a passenger, and I will enjoy the ride.”

Cigarettes entered Paul’s life because he allowed them in, probably with no questions asked. How many decades did he end his day with a cigarette, inhaling deeply and exhaling slowly? How many times did he light up first thing in the morning almost before his feet touched the floor? I don’t know.

Yes, he knew all the reasons to stop smoking. He knew all about the information on how to quit cigarettes. He had seen the statistics; he had known people who died of lung cancer, or emphysema. He had seen the x-rays of blackened, rotting lungs oozing slime.

He had even tried a time or two to quit. He tried will power, he tried the gum, he tried the patch, but nothing ever came of any of it.

In the final analysis, he embraced this particular devil. The fact was, he enjoyed smoking, he loved to smoke. Cigarettes took him to a place he could not get to any other way. A place where he felt safe, free from all the gathered turmoil of the world. It was a place he could not, and would not, trade for anything, even for his life.

Paul’s unspoken message to his friends, his family, to the world, and to himself was, “This is where life has taken me. I accept it. One way or another I am going to die. We all are. So, given the choice, why shouldn’t I die on my terms? No reason. So that is what I’m going to do.”

And that is what he did.

Not long before Paul died, when everyone in the theatre group, including Paul, knew his days were numbered, we staged a roast in his honor.

When Paul, emaciated and stooped, walked into the theatre the evening of the roast wearing a bright blue cowboy outfit, the house came down. It was one of his grandest entrances, and it was a perfect Act 1, Scene 1, for what was to follow. Despite the sobering subtext, it was an evening of rollicking good humor.

But at the very end of the evening, I, as emcee, injected the only serious note:

“Ladies and gentlemen, I have known Paul for 20 years, and in that time he has become my brother. He is family.

“And in all that time I have never known him to be anything other than who he is.

“There is a beauty in that. There is an innocence in that. But most of all, there is a purity in that.

“And so I’m glad that you’re all here tonight. Because it gives me the chance to say publicly what I’ve always said in my heart:

“Paul, I love you madly.”

A few months later we scattered Paul’s ashes on a nearby mountaintop.

That was almost 20 years ago. Now, from the vantage point afforded by time, I look back and I think I can understand why Paul thought the way he did about the reasons to stop smoking. And despite everything, I can even admire it somehow, however grudgingly. I mean, he had the courage to live the way he wanted to. How many of us can say the same?

At the same time, I am filled with anger.

I said earlier that it was almost impossible to become angry with Paul. But I am angry with him now, and I have been angry for 20 years.

I am angry at his outrageous selfishness. I am angry because he felt that his personal pleasure was more important than anything else. I am angry that he left us because he thought his obligation to a weed was greater than his obligation to the people who loved him.

What kind of person would do that?

If Paul could send a message today, I hope he would have the wisdom say to all the smokers of the world:

“Here is one of the main reasons to stop smoking; here is how to quit cigarettes:

“Remember that you are not in this alone. This is not just about you. Nothing you do is just about you. This is also about the people who count on you, who need you for a million reasons that neither you nor they may even understand. This is about the people who love you.

“If for no other reason, do it for them.”

I’m still angry with Paul.

And I miss him. Every day.

Stop Smoking Medication – An Analysis Of The Different Types Available

With the advancement of science and technology, several methods have been developed to stop smoking. Of course, the most popular of these methods still remain the oral medicines, as these are quite easy to consume and most of them show good effects in curbing the habit. But not all of them can be branded as safe. Before taking any stop smoking medication, it is important that you know their pros and cons fully well.

Among the popular stop smoking medications being used today are included NicVAX, varenicline, bupropion in addition to the herbal remedies. Let us learn more about these medications.

NicVAX – NicVAX is a conjugated vaccine of nicotine itself. This vaccine is injected into the bloodstream of the smoker. When the person smokes, NicVAX molecules merge with the nicotine molecules making them heavier. These heavy molecules are then unable to enter into the brain. As a result the addictive effect of the nicotine is not felt, since the nicotine molecules are stopped from entering the central nervous system. Many experts are feeling that NicVAX is perhaps the best stop smoking medication ever developed, because if the the addictive nature of the smoking is stopped, then there is a very less chance that a person will continue smoking.

However, some people feel NicVAX would not be very successful in people who are very heavy smokers. If such people even take NicVAX, there is a potential danger that they might go on smoking more cigarettes just because they do not feel the punch as before. So, instead of reducing the smoking habit, there is a very great chance that NicVAX might actually aggravate the problem. Yet, there are tests being conducted and so far they have only shown positive results for NicVAX.

Varenicline – Varenicline is the very popular prescription drug known as Chantix in the US and Champix in Europe. This drug, manufactured by Pfizer, is actually the first nicotinic receptor agonist, which works in two ways. First, it curbs the smokers craving to take another smoke. And second, it helps in curing the harm that nicotine has already caused in the body. Varenicline can reduce the effects that a person feels for smoking, and that is the reason why it is effective as a stop smoking medication.

But varenicline can cause some unpleasant side effects in the body. Nausea and vomiting may occur, and there could be headaches. Some people would find their sensation to taste changed while they are using this medication.

Buproprion – Buproprion is marketed under the brand name Welbutrin. Its main capacity at acting as a stop smoking medication stems from the fact that it has antidepressant properties. Due to this, it can be a very useful ally for a person who is planning to give up smoking. If depression is kept out of the way, the person has a better chance to give up smoking entirely.

An overuse of buproprion can cause eating disorders like anorexia nervosa and bulimia. There is also evidence that its overintake can cause epilepsy in the long run. People with cirrhosis, kidney ailments and high blood pressure are not prescribed the drug.

Herbal Remedies – Herbal remedies for smoking cessation have been singularly used since centuries, but it is only lately that they are being sold as formulations. SmokeRX is a good example of the herbal remedy brands available today. As their name suggests, herbal remedies contain only of herbs. They are also quite fast-acting. SmokeRX begins showing effects in as less as a week.

Hence, every stop smoking medication available in the market today has its merits and demerits. That is the reason why smokers are shying away from these medications and are looking out for alternative medicines to help them to kick their smoking habit.

The electronic cigarette online survey

The electronic cigarette online survey.

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), which rush in popularity in 2008, may be the most promising product for tobacco harm reduction yet. E-cigarettes deliver a nicotine vapor without the combustion products that are responsible for nearly all of smoking’s health effects. Other than anecdotal accounts, there is little information about who uses e-cigarettes, and whether people who switch from cigarettes to e-cigarettes experience changes in symptoms caused by smoking. This pilot online survey, conducted by tobaccoharmreduction.org, investigated e-cigarette use for smoking cessation and changes in health status and smoking caused symptoms.

A convenience sample (n=303) was enrolled by e-mail and links on various blogs and forums in May-June 2009. Independent university researchers at the www.tobaccoharmreduction.org project analyzed the data.

All respondents previously smoked and 91% had attempted to stop smoking before trying ecigarettes.

Most respondents resided in the USA (72%) and 21% were in Europe. About half

(55%) were 31-50, while 32% were >50 years old. Most (79%) of the respondents had been using e-cigarettes for <6 months and reported using them as a complete (79%) or partial (17%) replacement for, rather than in addition to (4%), cigarettes. The majority of respondents reported that their general health (91%), smoker’s cough (97%), ability to exercise (84%), and sense of smell (80%) and taste (73%) were better since using e-cigarettes and none reported that these were worse. Although people whose e-cigarette use completely replaced smoking were more likely to experience improvements in health and smoking caused symptoms, most people who substituted e-cigarettes for even some of their cigarettes experienced improvements.

These are highly motivated and passionate e-cigarette users who may have different experiences than average e-cigarette users or smokers, and thus the estimates cannot be extrapolated to all smokers or e-cigarette users. However, the results still suggest that very few e-cigarette users are not using them to replace cigarettes and there are many switchers and current smokers who could have the reported experience. Unfortunately e-cigarettes have been banned in some jurisdictions (e.g., Canada, Victoria (Australia)) where switching from cigarettes to e-cigarettes was documented. The lack of available and legal e-cigarettes may cause some users to resume smoking.

Introduction

Awareness and use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) has dramatically increased in the past two years. These devices, which are manufactured and sold by several different companies, deliver nicotine by vaporizing a gel composed of water, propylene glycol, flavorings, and nicotine. E-cigarettes deliver nicotine without the products of combustion that are inhaled by smoking cigarettes. Therefore, the health risks are likely similar to those from smokeless tobacco, which has approximately 1% of the mortality risk of smoking. There is likely some remaining risk due to the stimulant effects of nicotine. E-cigarettes are one category of no combustion nicotine product (others being smokeless tobacco and pharmaceutical nicotine products) that are promising for tobacco harm reduction, the substitution of less harmful nicotine products for cigarettes [3,4].

E-cigarettes are widely available in the United States and Europe and are also available online through many different distributors. E-cigarettes have been banned in some jurisdictions including Canada [5,6] and Victoria (Australia) [6] and are subject to the indoor “smoking” bans in others (e.g., [7]). Although there are legitimate concerns about quality control and product tampering, the importation/sale bans have been criticized by public health advocates because they do not merely address the products’ flaws, but eliminate a promising smoking cessation intervention, offering few realistic options for bringing the product back to market. There is a high likelihood that some people who switched from cigarettes to e-cigarettes but lose access to e-cigarettes will resume smoking.

There are many testimonials and anecdotes on the internet about people switching from cigarettes to e-cigarettes but, to our knowledge, there have been no quantified data published.

One online e-cigarette distributor based in the United Kingdom conducted an online marketing survey of their e-cigarette users and made their data available to researchers at the University of Alberta School of Public Health for re-analysis.

The objectives of this study were to describe e-cigarette users’ patterns of cigarette and e-cigarette usage and smoking cessation attempts and to compare health status and smoking-attributable symptoms between people who completely switched from smoking to e-cigarettes, those who partially switched, and those who supplemented cigarette smoking with e-cigarette usage.

The survey assessed respondents’ use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, smoking cessation (including use of pharmaceutical products and switching to e-cigarettes) and changes in smoking-caused symptoms since using e-cigarettes. The dataset included 304 observations, one of which excluded from all analyses because only country of residence and comments were entered.

There were two sets of two observations each, which had the same IP address. There were no entries with the same e-mail address. In addition, there were 31 observations with no IP or email address.

Results

Approximately half of the sample was between the ages of 31 and 50, one-third were more than 50 years old and none were under the age of 18. Nearly three-quarters resided in the US, followed by 17% from the UK. Most of the respondents had been using e-cigarettes for less than six months and all had smoked prior to using e-cigarettes. Most of the respondents had previously tried to stop smoking multiple times.

The majority (86%) of respondents had tried pharmaceutical products to quit smoking, nearly two-thirds of whom indicated that these products did not help them to stop smoking. However, most of the sample was able to use e-cigarettes as a complete replacement for cigarettes.

The majority of the respondents indicated that their general health, smoker’s cough, ability to exercise, sense of smell and sense of taste were better since starting to use e-cigarettes and none indicated that these were worse when responding to these five questions.

On average, respondents who lived in Europe had used e-cigarettes for longer than respondents in the US, but were less likely to use e-cigarettes as a complete replacement for cigarettes. There was a positive relationship between the number of times participants had tried to stop smoking and using e-cigarettes as a complete replacement for cigarettes. Most (81%) of the respondents who indicated that pharmaceutical products did not help them stop smoking used ecigarettes as a complete replacement for cigarettes.

Although the majority of respondents reported that their health and smoking-caused symptoms improved since using e-cigarettes, there were some notable trends in which groups were more

likely to report improvements. Respondents who had been using e-cigarettes for a longer period of time, who had completely replaced their cigarettes with e-cigarettes, or were younger, were more likely to report improvements.

Stop smoking right now

So you want to give up smoking, but why? ‘Because it’s bad for your health is not a good reason.’  To get motivated, you need a powerful, personal reason to stop. Maybe you want to protect your family from secondhand smoke. Maybe the thought of lung cancer frightens you. Or you don’t want to burn a hole in your baby’s ugg boots. Choose a reason that is strong enough to outweigh the urge to light up.

WAYS OF QUITTING…

Switch to a brand you find distasteful.

Change to a brand that’s low in tar and nicotine a couple of weeks before your target date. This will help change your smoking behavior. However, DO NOT smoke more cigarettes, inhale them more often or more deeply, or place your fingertips over the holes in the filters. All of these will increase your nicotine intake, and the idea is to get your body used to functioning without nicotine.

Smoke only half of each cigarette.

Each day, postpone lighting your first cigarette 1 hour.Decide you’ll smoke only during odd or even hours of the day; Decide beforehand how many cigarettes you’ll smoke during the day. For each additional cigarette, give a dollar to your favorite charity.

Change your eating habits to help you cut down. For example, drink milk, which many people consider incompatible with smoking. End meals or snacks with something that won’t lead to a cigarette. For example, Vegetarian diet analysis

Reach for a glass of juice instead of a cigarette for a “pick-me-up.”

Remember: Cutting down can help you quit, but it’s not a substitute for quitting. If you’re down to about seven cigarettes a day, it’s time to set your target date and get ready to stick to it. Don’t Smoke “Automatically”.

Smoke only those cigarettes you really want. Catch yourself before you light up a cigarette out of pure habit.

Don’t empty your ashtrays. This will remind you of how many cigarettes you’ve smoked each day, and the sight and smell of stale butts will be very unpleasant.

Make yourself aware of each cigarette by using the opposite hand or putting cigarettes in an unfamiliar location or a different pocket to break the automatic reach.

Make smoking inconvenient

Stop buying cigarettes by the carton. Wait until one pack is empty before you buy another; Stop carrying cigarettes with you at home and at work. Make them difficult to get to.

Make smoking unpleasant

Smoke only under circumstances that aren’t especially pleasurable for you. If you like to smoke with others, smoke alone. Turn your chair toward an empty corner and focus only on the cigarette you are smoking and its many negative effects.

Collect all you cigarette butts in one large glass container as a visual reminder of the filth smoking represents.

You’ve Stopped Smoking — But Where’s The Money?

by John English

You bought my book, KILL THE ADDICTION. You read it twice, and came to the conclusion that I made it all up, or that I was really a lifelong non-smoker, because my method seemed too simplistic. This couldn’t possibly work! Yet you thought a lot about it and even had a close friend read it to confirm your conclusions. Surprise…your friend said “Well, it is all totally logical. What do you have to lose? If I were still smoking, I would certainly give it a shot”. So you sat down and went through it one more time, doing everything by the method…

AMAZING! It worked. Within just a few days you had the cravings down to an occasional twinge. Within a week you had what the author called “the moment you knew with absolute certainty that you would NEVER smoke again”. You also knew that you would never miss it. (It was easy). Elation! You started telling anyone who would listen. Congratulations.

Then with a blinding flash of intuition, you knew with absolute certainty that the large amount of money you should be saving would not be there. Instead, the money you should be saving would get itself reabsorbed into other things, without you even being able to pinpoint what. At only $5.00 per day, you should have a cool $18,250, completely tax-free plus interest, in only ten years.

Better do something to make sure that happens. But what?

Most people live right up to their means, meaning their expenses equal their net income, so that at the end of each year they have saved nothing. Many people go one worse, living beyond their means and racking up credit card and/or mortgage debt in horrifying amounts. Why? Because they do not have a system in place to help them ‘save money for a rainy day’, as the saying goes. Putting money aside not only to cover the unexpected setback, but also for ones old age has never been as important as now. This is because our life expectancy in the fortunate developed countries is steadily increasing. What is more, with the explosive development in genetic research, postponing death has changed from being an unlikely dream to a realistic probability in the not so distant future.

The most obvious saving system guaranteed to be successful is the one I call the BaSIC method, standing for Budget and Save, Invest, Consult. “That’s obvious,” you say, but as with almost anything in life, it all depends upon your interpretation of the four key words.

A final word of caution: the BaSIC method calls for a heavy dose of self-discipline which so many people interpret as a threat to their personal freedom. But it doesn’t have to be, so let’s begin!

 BUDGET

For this first part of the process, we are talking about a personal budget for a single person devoid of any family responsibilities, or a family unit. Either way, we’ll call it a personal budget as opposed to a business budget, and it comprises four steps.

Step 1: Gather Expense Information. Putting it another way, find out exactly what you are spending, meaning how much and what for. Do not at this stage, in any way, change your usual spending patterns, even if some expenditures seem wasteful to you, now that you are working on the new method. Carry around a small notebook and write down every single expense, however necessary or however small. For example, grocery shopping need only be one entry such as Groceries $64.39, or Candy $0.67, or Clothing $125.50 and so forth. Do not try to analyze, criticize, or justify any expense whatsoever. Just go about your life as you usually do, and only take note of expenses.

It’s best to jot down the expense right away, not waiting until the evening to write them down. Don’t look back and analyze any of your notes – just file them away.

Step 2: Group/Total Your Expenses. Reading through your expense record, start trying to mentally group your expenses. For example, you might come up with main groups like Food (groceries, light snacks — as distinct from a full restaurant meal, liquor, candy); Entertainment (dinner out, movies, DVD’s rented, theater, amusement parks); Household (furniture/furnishings, home insurance, alarm system, repairs/maintenance, heating, lighting, pool).

Now get a spreadsheet showing columns for each group and (sub-group) and post all your expenses to the correct categories, total up each column then divide each total by the number of months involved noting your expenses. You now have an average expense per month.

Step 3: Adjust for seasonal/other distortions. You might have done the gathering of information during the six month period of November through April, failing to reflect new beach towels and chlorine for the pool. Also in colder months your home heating will be higher than in summer. Vacations may usually be in summer, so they would not even have appeared. There are so many variables that you will have to go over each category and add or deduct from the total, the distortions, based upon the best estimates you can make. Now you have new totals.

Step 4: Analyze your expenses. When you first examine where you are spending your money and how much, you may be really surprised. In any event, the first thing you now do is total up all your adjusted average monthly expenses and compare that figure to your total monthly NET income. If the expenses exceed the income, you are in serious trouble because you are getting steadily further into debt. If they are roughly equal, you are saving nothing. If your expenses arebelow your income, where is the money you have saved? (If nowhere, something went wrong with your calculations).

In any event, you want to save more, especially the $1,850 per year you were wasting on cigarettes. Analyze each expense group and sub-group to make cuts, and the new numbers become your budget for the next one year. It is also imperative that you budget for the unexpected so you should allow funds for such things as illness and car maintenance.

 SAVE

This second part of the process is simply the result of your budgeting, including the all-important cuts you decide upon, resulting in an acceptable difference between your income and what you spend. That is your savings goal.

Finally, you have to really work hard at staying within your budget. Also, feel free to periodically review your budget for two reasons. You need to remind yourself where you have made cuts so that they really happen, and also because a budget must be open to revision as the reality of your life is modified by your lifestyle, as well as by circumstances beyond your control.

It is not easy, but it is doable and very much worthwhile. The reward is the sense of increased security you will enjoy as you see your savings grow.

 INVEST

Do not leave your savings in your bank account, for two good reasons. First, banks pay very little interest on money left in a personal savings or checking account. Secondly, if your savings are as readily available to you as writing a check, you are bound to be tempted sooner or later to withdraw part or all of your savings to indulge some great temptation, and you may not be able to resist it, or you may tell yourself that you will pay it back next month, and next month never comes.

Sound investment is based upon an analysis of the risks you are prepared to take, or rather, the risks that seem wise for you to take given your age, employment, state of health, lifestyle and dependants, to name only some of the factors involved in this type of risk assessment. Generally speaking, you should also diversify your investments, as all the victims of Ponzi schemes will (too late) attest.

When you start your saving scheme, part of your investment can be “locked-in” for a period of a year or more but be sure not to devote all you have saved to this type of investment. Remember that one of the objectives of building your savings is to be in a position to meet unexpected but necessary expenses. The most important aspect to investing is the one that follows.

 CONSULT

It is said that the person who renounces legal advice and represents himself in court has a fool for a lawyer! It should also be said that the person who handles his own investments has a fool for a consultant. And I will go much further than that….the person who takes investment advice from family, friends, neighbors across the fence, or business associates may as well set fire to his money! None of the above has the knowledge or the training or the information resources of the only person who should be giving you advice, a professional financial consultant. Another word of advice here, too. The professional financial consultant you choose should preferably not be associated with or employed by a bank, as they have a conflict of interest to deal with.

Now that you have a full understanding of the BaSIC method and know where your money is, take joy in remembering that it all began when you stopped smoking for life!
