Kick the nasty habit of smoking

Do you want to kick the nasty habit of smoking? Well you definitely should because smoking is definitely one of the fiercest killers out there. Governments world wide are starting to realize that the cost of smoking for the public health system are humongous and they are trying to impose stricter and stricter smoking bans. You could even say that it’s open season for smokers nowadays. And with cigarettes prices going up quitting smoking might not be a bad idea after all. In fact it’s a great idea if you care about your health and the health of those around you. Well, the motivation is certainly out there .All you have to do is google for stuff like lung cancer or throat cancer and you’ll find tons of information on how smoking can kill you. The evidence is overwhelming and the fact that you actually pay for something to kill you should be reason enough to stop. After all why make the tobacco companies richer than they already are. If somebody would walk up to you on the street and say “hey, I can offer you a slow and painful death – all you have to do is pay me “   you’d probably  start laughing or just feel the urge to slap them. But that’s the reality of the tobacco company – smoker relation .They’re killing you – and you’re paying them to do it. Kicking this nasty habit is hard but surely not impossible.

If you’ve decided to quit here’s a list of things you can do to make it easier:

First of all clean you house and turn it in to the home of a non smoker. Throw away and hide everything that might remind you of this nasty habit – ashtrays, lighters, etc.Surround yourself with nonsmokers and, for a while, try to avoid people that smoke.Your first day as a non smoker should be very relaxed. Stay away from stressful situations.

Constantly remind yourself that there is no benefit in smoking.

How and why you shold quit smoking

Ever wanted to quit smoking? Chances are you’ve tried to kick this nasty habit numerous times. Well you should try again because putting cigarettes away for good is a matter of persistence and will power. Motivation for quitting is all around you. Search the internet, talk to friends and family, it’s impossible not to hear a story about someone who died recently from a smoking related disease. So why subject yourself to all the risks that smoking involves. Did you know that 87 percent of lung cancers are caused by smoking? And if you thought that lung cancer is the only thing to fear then think again because smoking is also responsible for heart and blood vessel disease, stroke and cataracts as well as numerous types of deadly cancer. The addictiveness of tobacco is caused by nicotine, a powerful narcotic, as addictive as heroin and cocaine. But the health benefits of putting cigarettes away for good are far greater than the problems you will face trying to quit. Just think about it. You will increase your life span. You will look and feel younger and healthier, you will smell better, and everyone around you will perceive you as a more responsible person. There are also financial benefits to quitting smoking. Think about all the things you cold buy with the money that you are literally burning right now.

So if you’ve decided to quit let me give you some tips on how to make it easier. First of all try to be as relaxed as you can on quitting day. Try to stay away from smokers and places where you used to associate smoking with fun. Try to be more active – jog, swim or go to the gym. And a final piece of advice: constantly remind yourself of the benefits that will follow quitting smoking.

I Can’t Stop Smoking – What Can I Do?

If you have tried to stop smoking previously and failed you need to ask yourself “why did I fail?”. If you can identify the reasons you failed last time you can address these and work out a new plan of action where you will SUCCEED!

You should pick a date to actually stop, a little way off to give you time to prepare but not so far off that you lose interest. Then you should make a plan including the following:

  • Mark the date on your calendar, in your diary and put a sticker on the ‘fridge.
  • Tell friends and family about your Quit Day.
  • Get rid of the ashtrays in your home, car, and workplace and maybe use some air freshener or even shampoo your carpets, particularly in the car.
  • See your doctor for advice on what nicotine replacement therapy might be needed. Are you going to use nicotine patches, lozenges, sprays, chewing gum or even some prescribed medicines? He will help you decide on this depending on how long you have been smoking and how much you smoke.
  • Set up a support system to get you through the difficult withdrawal period. You might be able to enlist the help of your partner or a friend who can spend time with you and participate with you in activities and interests to keep your mind engaged. You will not have time to think about cigarettes if you are busy. In addition, or alternatively, you may want to join a local support group or National Health Service stop smoking program.
  • Practice saying, “No thanks, I don’t smoke.”
  • Stock up on some oral substitutes or comforters such as sugar free gum, carrot sticks, hard candy, cinnamon sticks, straws or tooth picks.
  • If your doctor has prescribed a medicine such as bupropion you should remember to start taking it as directed.

All these measures, once in place, will help you once the time to quit comes along

  • On that day do not dwell on the situation but instead take on a purposeful manner and think about the day ahead Try a new routine, perhaps a different breakfast followed by a different route to work. This will put you in the right frame of mind to change your habits. Through that first day you might want to follow these suggestions :
  • Do not smoke at all- not even one puff!
  • Keep busy and active. Try to take some exercise during the day even if it’s just a short walk. Minimise your coffee breaks if you are at work, and don’t hang out with colleagues who smoke.
  • Drink lots of water and juices through the day.
  • Do what is necessary as regards your nicotine replacement therapy.
  • Avoid places and situations where the urge to smoke can be strong.
  • Try to avoid alcohol.
  • Think about your favourite food for lunch and maybe even treat yourself to a nice lunch.
  • Try to avoid the rationalisations which creep in when you feel you may be weakening. You know the sort of thing – I’ll just have one to get me through this rough patch, or, today is not such a good day, I’ll start tomorrow.

When you get to the evening and you haven’t smoked you can congratulate yourself on your achievement. You can now relax with some music, or a good book or TV film to occupy your mind and then go to bed knowing that you can stop smoking and that tomorrow should be even easier, no longer will you be saying “I can’t stop smoking”.

How Long Does Nicotine Stay in Your System After Quitting

This is a really good question, and it really depends on a number of factors. One is that if you are using some kind of nicotine replacement to help you quit smoking, the nicotine is still in your system, even if you aren’t actually smoking. What do you think is eliminating your cravings? If you want to get rid of nicotine for good, you have to quit using patches, gums and lozenges before  you will be rid of it from your body.

Unlike marijuana and other drugs that can linger in your bloodstream and urine for over a month, nicotine can be out of your bloodstream in a relatively short amount of time. In the brain, it takes about forty minutes from your last smoke and many of the effects can be gone within a few days. However, there is still nicotine present in other parts of your body. The drug can be in your fatty tissues, as well as your kidneys, and these effects will continue to be present as long as two to three weeks. A lot of this of course depends on you, how long you smoked, how much you weigh, and what kind of lifestyle you have, as well as how old you are.

In many cases professionals will tell you it doesn’t matter how long it takes to eliminate nicotine from your body, only the first three days are really critical to you. This is the crucial time period when your cravings for nicotine will be at their worst, and it is within this period that your need to light up will be strongest. As more days pass, the less you will crave a cigarette, and the less time you spend around others who smoke, or environments where there is the smell of smoking the easier it will be.

There are things you can do to speed up the process of eliminating nicotine from your body. One of the best ways to get rid of nicotine is to drink a lot of fluids, more so than you may already drink. The faster nicotine is flushed out of your system, the less time you will have cravings. In most cases, people will need to have something in their mouth and food may taste better than it ever did while you were smoking. This is a critical time when people will tend to eat in order to try to curb their cravings, and you shouldn’t do this. It will lead to excessive weight gain, and depression. If you must have something in your mouth, then chewing gum, or snacking on sunflower seeds can be a welcome alternative.

There is a great deal of information about the negative effects nicotine has on you, as well as what other ingredients in the smoke are bad for your health. This can include arsenic, formaldehyde, and even methane, just to name a few. These too will continue to be present in your body, even after your last light up. You can learn more about how you can flush nicotine and other toxins related to smoking out of your system. Before you change your diet or start any new exercise routine, you should always consult your doctor first.

Easy Way to Quit Smoking Without Much Struggling

So many people out there have expressed that they would like to quit smoking, if only it was a little easier. The thing is though; learning how to be a non-smoker does not have to be all that hard. If you take the right steps, stay in the right frame of mind and then follow some simple to follow instructions you should have no trouble at all with quitting.

One of the first things you need to do is to remind yourself just why it is that you want to stop smoking. Is it because of your health? Do you want to see your children and grandchildren grow up in this world? Are you trying to save money? Maybe you have finally had enough with spending thousands of dollars a year on cigarettes. Just think about all of the vacations you and your loved ones could go on if you were putting that money into a savings account instead of using it to buy cigarettes!

Once you have reminded yourself just why it is that you want to and need to stop smoking, it is time to take action. While there are some people out there who have found success with quitting cold turkey that is not always the best method for everyone. You should not have to worry about spending money on products to help you quit either.

What you need to do is to figure out just how many cigarettes you usually smoke in a day. Let’s say for example that you normally smoke around twenty cigarettes a day. Your goal for the next day should be to only smoke sixteen cigarettes. In order to achieve this without breaking down, you will have to space out the amount of time in between your cigarette breaks. Once you feel the urge to smoke, chew some gum or get involved in a conversation so that you are distracted for about ten minutes of so.

After you have become very used to smoking just sixteen cigarettes a day, it is time to reduce that number down to twelve cigarettes a day. You will continue this pattern until you are finally smoke free. You may not believe it now, but there will come a point where you simply cannot stand the taste of the cigarette or the smell of the smoke. When this happens, you know that you have finally made it.

Now, this may take you two weeks or two months to quit smoking. Everyone makes it at their own pace. Do not worry about the time it takes you because this is not a race. When you make sure that you are following the rules of this method of quitting smoking, you will find that you will be a healthier and happier version of your old self.

Once you have seen for yourself that you really can stop smoking without struggling, you will be able to witness to your friends just how easy it is. Maybe with your help they can stop smoking too.
