Conquering the Fear of Quitting Smoking

The addiction to nicotine is the world’s single most dangerous epidemic, and also, the most preventable.  Billions worldwide are addicted to nicotine, and many will try to quit dozens of times without success.  In this article, I hope to shed some light on the facts about your addiction, and also some ways of coping with the uncomfortable side effects of cessation.

Making the decision to quit is the easiest part, but actually putting down the cigarette and lighter can be a seemingly impossible undertaking.  It is understandable however, for smoking has been there when you needed it most.  When you are bored and waiting around in public, or stuck in traffic, or even getting off a long flight, the cigarettes are always there for you, easing the tension of daily life.  The first question I would like to present you with is this: “Does the actual act of cigarette smoking remove any stress from your life permanently?”  Permanently is the operative word there, because although cigarettes may distract you, they only serve to delay feelings of stress and anxiety.

Many people fear quitting for various reasons, and I will now address some of the more common concerns that those quitting are faced with, while laying out the facts for you.

1. “I’m afraid if I quit, I will gain a tremendous amount of weight!”

Weight gain is generally caused by your body trying to counter balance the loss of one addiction by replacing it with another.  When you smoke, the nicotine releases the blood suger from your pancreas into your blood stream, so when you quit smoking, you will begin to eat more regularly.  Keeping an eye on your diet and maintaining an exercise program can counter balance this symptom.

2.”The anxiety is simply too great, I need cigarettes because the withdrawal is unbearable!”

While the withdrawal can be very uncomfortable, bear in mind that these physical symptoms are very short term, and will only last for 3-7 days.  You have tricked your body into thinking it required something which it does not, so the discomfort is your body readjusting to a non chemical dependent status.

3.”How will I deal with stressful situations without cigarettes?”

Naturally, you have tricked yourself into believing that cigarettes help you deal with stress, but think back to before you were a smoker(if you can.)  How did you deal with stress?  Are you now, as a smoker, less stressed than you were before overall?  I can make a bet that most of you dealt with the same amount of stress before you were a smoker as you do now.

After addressing these concerns, the only way to quit smoking is to simply stop doing it.  As simple as it sounds, that is the truth.  There are many options and aids to help you quit smoking, but in my experience, the all natural method (no patches/gum) made me feel healthier, and actually helped me to stay quit much more effectively than common anti-smoking products.  Good luck to you in your life changing decision to quit, and look to your local department of health for further information.

Just What Is Smoking Doing To Your Health

You’re a smoker.  You don’t want to be a smoker.  That’s good thinking.  There are many persuasive benefits of quitting smoking and very few justifications for maintaining it (unless, of course, you feel strangely compelled toward slow-motion suicide).

If you’re reading this article, you want to quit smoking.  You wouldn’t bother with it if you were more interested in finding some place to stock up on cheap cigarettes.  So, let’s provide a little extra motivation as you prepare to make a very positive change in your life.  Here’s a reminder of the benefits of quitting smoking.

First, you’re less likely to die.  Well, that’s not strictly true.  We’re all going to die at some point.  Quitting cigarettes will, however, make it much less likely that you’ll die any earlier than you must.  Think about that for a moment.  What other possible motivation could you need?  If you keep smoking you’re going to die early.  It’s that simple.

Second, you’re going to experience less pain.  If the prospect of living longer doesn’t excite you, the chance to avoid excruciating pain might.  You see, tobacco doesn’t just quietly and gently kill you.  It creates agonizing, painful conditions that no one wants to experience.  Pain avoidance should always make the list of benefits of quitting smoking.  Brutal heart attacks aren’t comfy.  Lingering, hacking coughs associated with lung cancer aren’t enjoyable.  Tumors on your throat?  Painful.  And let’s not even go into that whole inability to breathe while lying in bed late at night.  The gasping for air and all of that.  Not comfortable.

Third, you’re going to get rich.  It may seem trivial to bring up such a mercenary consideration when discussing the benefits of quitting smoking, but with cigarette prices and taxes always on the move upwards, it’s worth mentioning.  How would you like a $2,000 per year raise?  Say goodbye to the Marlboro man and it’s yours.  If you sunk the money saved by becoming a non-smoker into a decent interest bearing account, you’d be looking at well over $100,000 over the course of fifteen years.

Fourth, you’ll be able to be a member of polite society.  The days when everyone smoked and lighting up was an acceptable form of behavior is long gone.  Unless you’re starring in Mad Men, you can’t puff and huff all day long while maintaining the pleasant company of other people.  Instead, you’re relegated to standing under awnings in snowstorms, shoulders hunched, trying to finish a cigarette before frostbite sits in.  Many people pick up the habit do to peer pressure.  Maybe that same force is a good enough reason to give up tobacco.

The reasons to quit smoking are pretty persuasive.  Hopefully this little recap of four reasons to become a non-smoker will provide you with a slight kick in the pants as you prepare to kick the habit once and for all.

Quit Smoking Advice That You can Live With!

Here is one good piece of quit smoking advice. I remember a friend told me that “Smokers don’t get old because they die young.” This is true if you think about it. Most smokers die in their middle age. Approximately 4 million people die every year around the world because of smoking. When you decide to quit smoking, commit to it. There must be no doubt or any negative views about how hard it is to quit. You must focus yourself about the benefits of being smoke free. Smokers who have successfully conquered their craving show that anyone can quit smoking. Anyone can give up smoking. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been smoking but the fact that you stop is a great life saving accomplishment. List the reasons for quitting. Don’t just let this quit smoking advice go in one ear and then out the other. Planning and then applying this quit smoking advice is the stepping stone to success. And these plans must certainly be followed. If you can’t quit instantly, here is one excellent piece of quit smoking advice. You can decrease the tar amount in the cigarettes that you smoke. But don’t smoke more than the usual number of cigarettes that you smoke in a day. An increase of the number of cigarettes means more nicotine intake into your body. Here is another good piece of quit smoking advice. Regularly cut the number of cigarettes that you smoke. Also: Instead of the whole cigarette, smoke half of it. Another piece of quit smoking advice: When you just have to light up, refrain from lighting your cigarette for an hour. Decide in advance on how many cigarettes you will smoke for the day. One of the most important quit smoking advice to remember is to cut down, not increase your intake. A change of eating pattern would assist in cutting down on smoking. With each meal take something which would not lead to smoking a cigarette. Replace the cigarette with fruits or juice, this will make you healthier and will detoxify your body. Cutting down is not a substitute for stopping. When you set a quantity of cigarettes per day you should stick to it and later on probably lessen the target number. Don’t throw the butts in your ashtrays for it will leave an awful scent that will remind you of cigarettes and wanting to smoke. One more piece of quit smoking advice is to make smoking difficult. Don’t buy cigarettes in cartons; instead wait until you finish one before buying another pack. We truly hope that you find this quit smoking advice helpful.

Quit Smoking Information

Here is some quit smoking information that most smokers are unaware of. All smokers are aware that smoking is injurious to health. Yet, many continue to smoke even when they know that this habit actually kills. Evidently there is not enough quit smoking information to quit smoking. Of course, there are many other reasons, but this one is the most critical, i.e. your life. Smoking is such an irony; you pay money to buy yourself a slow and extremely painful death.  Here is some additional quit smoking information that will hopefully help you to stop smoking today. If you look for one reason to quit smoking, you will find many. Some are very well known and some not so popular. Check out the following list and get motivated to stop this habit before it stops your life. 1: Destroying your looks. Did you know that smoking is ‘stealing’ oxygen from your blood? The under-oxygenated blood in turn affects most of the organs in the body, and in a highly destructive manner. One of the organs thus attacked and very obvious to the naked eye, is the skin. The skin of a smoker will have an unhealthy pallor and will suffer from dryness. So very often the skin will look like parchment paper and it is easily wrinkled at a very young age. A good reason to quit smoking is obvious, to look better and prevent premature wrinkling of your skin. 2: Protecting those who live around you. Your loved ones. If for no other reason this quit smoking information should motivate anyone to quit smoking. A good number of reports point to the fact that secondhand smoke is much more harmful than firsthand smoke itself. In this case you would be guilty of poisoning your children, spouse, parents and friends. Is that not the most important reason to quit smoking? 3:          Preventing lung cancer. More than 80 percent of smokers will suffer from some form of respiratory related diseases. A very high percentage of this number will be from lung cancer. This is a horrendous, torturously slow and extremely painful death. You would literally suffocate over 6-36 months dying a lingering death that you would not wish on your worst enemy. Don’t you think this is an excellent reason to quit smoking? 4: You smell so terrible. A smoker smells of cigarettes: all the time.  No matter what deodorant you use, you still smell of cigarette smoke. And more often than not: your breath too.  Are you still searching for a reason to quit smoking? Use this quit smoking information and make a change in your life today.

Research Your Give Up Smoking Aids Well

Research Your Give Up Smoking Aids Well. Your success depends on your choice of give up smoking aids. Millions of people die of smoking-induced lung cancer and heart disease each year. At the same time, millions of people try to kick the habit every year with varied degrees of success. A lot of this success or failure is owed to the type of quit smoking aids chosen. What are the choices you have in give up smoking aids? Since the dependency on nicotine is difficult to fight, you need to have all the support you can get; and in order to get the best support, you need to know what give up smoking aids are available to you. Therefore, before you start your give up smoking exercise, check out what is available to you. 1: The nicotine patch. This is one of the most popular give up smoking aids because it is easy to use and quite effective in fighting the smoking habit.  People love to use this method because it means that they do not have to worry about taking medication or withdrawal symptoms. 2: The nicotine gum method. These give up smoking aids have the same ingredients as the nicotine patch but it is used differently. While the nicotine patch is pasted on the skin and left to work at its own pace, nicotine gum is used when the craving for a cigarette is felt. This works in two ways. It reduces the dependency on nicotine, and it also replaces the cigarette smoking habit with that of chewing, which some people find very helpful and calming. 3: The stop-smoking tea. This is one of the most popular natural give up smoking aids available in the market. Its popularity is owed to its fast action and lack of side effects. There are cases where the smoker could get rid of his/ her habit within a week with the stop-smoking tea. The tea has one hundred percent herbal ingredients and is comparatively low in cost. 4: Nicotine-free cigarettes. These give up smoking aids looks and even smells like real cigarettes. However, they contain no nicotine. These give up smoking aids are best for the people who are highly addicted to the habit. This type of aid would need to be supplemented by medication that fights the ensuing withdrawal symptoms. 5: Counseling. This is one of the most critical give up smoking aids that most smokers ignore. In order to be successful you would need to know what you should expect when you stop smoking. What are the withdrawal symptoms? How best to handle these? What are the medications available? How long does it take to get rid of the habit? These are only some of the questions that counseling would provide.

These Laws and Regulations are a Good Reason Why You should Quit Smoking Tobacco

With these new laws and regulations going into effect it is probably the right time to quit smoking tobacco for good.  American Lung Association Report Shows 2007 Shaping Up to be a Banner Year for Tobacco Control Policies. Mid-Year Update Details Progress to Date in 2007; 7 States Significantly Strengthened Smoke free Air Laws, 8 Raised Tobacco Taxes New York, NY (July 24, 2007).

In 2007, many states have taken strong action to protect their citizens from tobacco by making public places and workplaces smoke free, raising tobacco taxes, and passing laws to protect citizens from cigarette-caused fires, according to a report released today by the American Lung Association. In the 2007 Mid-Term Update to its publication State Legislated Actions on Tobacco Issues or SLATI, the Lung Association summarizes state tobacco control laws enacted in 2007 on smoke free air, tobacco taxes, smoking prevention spending and fire-safety standards for cigarettes among other issues. “In January 2006, the American Lung Association issued its Smoke free Air 2010 Challenge, urging all states to adopt strong smoke free air laws.  The 2007 SLATI Mid-Term Report shows significant progress continues to be made. 22 states and the District of Columbia have laws fully protecting their citizens from secondhand smoke. We challenge policymakers in the remaining states to do the same,” said Bernadette A. Toomey, President and CEO of the American Lung Association.

Also in 2007, eight states have increased their cigarette taxes, already matching the total for all of 2006.  Forty-three states and the District of Columbia have increased their cigarette tax at least once since 2002.  “We are encouraged that states continue to increase tobacco taxes, which makes cigarettes more costly. Higher cigarette prices deter young people from starting to smoke and help motivate adult smokers to quit,” said Toomey.

An increasing number of states have approved legislation setting fire-safety standards for cigarettes.  Twelve states have approved this legislation in 2007, and three more states have legislation awaiting action by the governor.  “This legislation is vital in the fight to reduce the 700 to 900 deaths annually from fires caused by cigarettes and other smoking materials,” she added.

A PDF copy of 2007 SLATI Mid-Term Report is available online.  This website is also the home of the online version of SLATI, which is updated on a regular basis to reflect changes in state tobacco control laws throughout the year. The American Lung Association is the leading organization working to prevent lung disease and promote lung health. Lung disease death rates continue to increase while other leading causes of death have declined. The American Lung Association funds vital research on the causes of and treatments for lung disease. With the generous support of the public, the American Lung Association is “Improving life, one breath at a time.”

How to Be Immune to the Swine Flu Onslaught in September & October

It will most likely infect 30-40% of the U.S.
population, or about 100 million people, according to
flu expert Ira Longini, from the University of
Washington’s School of Public Health.

Initial supplies of the swine flu vaccine, which will
be available sometime between mid-September to late
October 2009, are expected to be very limited — barely
enough to inoculate the 160 million people who are at
high risk of becoming infected.  An even bigger concern
is whether the fast-tracked vaccine is safe and
effective — since it’s being rushed to market without
the appropriate testing and safety evaluations.

There is a growing suspicion in the general population
and among certain members of the medical community,
including Dr. Joseph Mercola, the publisher of a
popular self-titled natural health newsletter, that
being exposed to this new swine flu vaccine might prove
to be more dangerous than the swine flu itself.

A new book, “The One-Minute Cure: The Secret to
Healing Virtually All Diseases,” offers compelling
evidence that the swine flu virus can be rendered
powerless in the body when one self-administers a
natural oxygenating substance. Madison Cavanaugh, the
book’s author, states that public fear is incorrectly
placed on the swine influenza virus itself. “Microbes,
germs, harmful bacteria and viruses, such as the swine
influenza virus, do not cause disease in and of
themselves,” Cavanaugh states.

“They do seek their natural habitat — such as an
oxygen-deficient body — rather than being the CAUSE of
the disease. It’s no different from the way mosquitoes
seek out stagnant water, but do not cause the pool to
become stagnant.”

Cavanaugh’s assertion is consistent with the findings
of Dr. Rudolf Virchow (1821 – 1902), also called the
“Father of Pathology.”

It is also supported by Louis Pasteur, the notable
19th century French chemist and microbiologist best
known for his remarkable breakthroughs in the causes
and prevention of disease, who recanted his germ theory
of disease at his deathbed, stating, “The microbe is
nothing. The terrain is everything.”

The terrain of which Pasteur spoke refers to an
oxygenated environment in the human body, which makes
for a strong immune system. A weakened or suppressed
state of the immune system only occurs when the human
body lacks oxygen, thereby allowing viruses, such as
the swine influenza virus, to breed.

It therefore stands to reason that the swine flu
virus does not CAUSE disease, but rather seeks out an
environment where it can thrive best — and that is in
oxygen-deprived bodies.

“A sufficiently oxygenated body is uninhabitable by
disease,” Cavanaugh states, and viruses can neither
survive nor thrive in it. Therefore, the best defense
against microbes, germs, harmful bacteria and viruses,
such as the swine flu virus, is to keep the body
oxygenated.”

Cavanaugh’s book, “The One-Minute Cure,” discusses
the therapeutic use of the only natural substance which
stimulates the movement of oxygen atoms from the
bloodstream to the cells to a dramatically greater
degree than is usually reached by other means.

The natural remedy can be self-administered at home
in less than a minute, and costs only 1-1/2 cents a day
to use.

Conquering the Fear of Quiting Smoking

Second Hand Smoke Affects your Pets

The life you save may be your pet’s!

There’s always been lots of information about second hand smoke and people but did you know there is considerable research proving secondhand smoke is harmful for pets too?

Think about this everytime you light up in your house with Fido on your lap, or when you’re taking Spot to his favorite park.

The American Lung Association of New Hampshire provides some stunning facts on why you should consider your pets when you smoke around them.

DOGS

• Dogs that inhale secondhand smoke are three times more likely to develop lung or nasal cancer than dogs living in smoke-free homes.
• Dogs can experience allergic reactions to secondhand smoke. Common symptoms of this allergic reaction are the scratching, biting, and chewing of their skin. Owners often confuse this reaction with fleas or food allergies.
• Cigarette butts can also be deadly. Two butts, if eaten by a puppy, can cause death in a relatively short period of time.

BIRDS

• Birds can react badly to secondhand smoke and may develop eye problems, as well as other respiratory problems like coughing and wheezing.
• Birds that sit on a smoker’s hand can experience contact dermatitis from the nicotine that remains on the smoker’s hand. This can cause them to pull out their feathers.

CATS

• Cats exposed to secondhand smoke in the home have a higher rate of an oral cancer called squamous cell carcinoma, which may be due to the way cats groom themselves. When cats groom themselves they eat the poisons from secondhand smoke that have settled on their fur.
• Cats exposed to secondhand smoke have a higher rate of feline lymphoma, a deadly form of cancer, than cats not exposed to secondhand smoke.
• Cats can develop respiratory problems, lung inflammation, and asthma as a result of secondhand smoke. There are 4,000 chemicals in secondhand smoke, and 43 are known to cause cancer.

Other dangerous issues can occur……

By ingestion of cigarette or cigar butts which contain toxins. Death- From 1-5 cigarettes and from 1/3-1 cigar can be fatal if ingested.
By drinking water that contains cigar or cigarette butts (which can have high concentrations of nicotine)
By ingestion of nicotine replacement gum and patches.

Think again of the health effects:

Breathing problems in dogs and asthmatic-like symptoms in cats
Salivation
Diarrhea
Vomiting
Cardiac abnormalities
Respiratory difficulties and respiratory paralysis
Feline lymphoma in cats
Lung cancer in dogs
Nasal cancer in dogs

Prevention:
As in the case of children and others in the home, don’t smoke.
If you must smoke take it outside- Don’t expose others to your smoke
Don’t allow others to smoke around your pets.
Keep ashtrays clean- Don’t leave butts in them for pets to find.
Dispose of nicotine gum and patches in receptacles that can’t be accessed by pets.
Consider quitting- The health effects of your smoking on pets is just one more good reason to quit.

If you can’t or won’t quit, consider a safer alternative……electric cigarettes. Products like Green Smoke are devices shaped like a cigarette but they contain a battery, water and nicotine. You’ll still get your nicotine fix but you and the people and pets around you won’t be inhaling the 4000 toxic chemicals that cause major health issues every day.

Stop Smoking Device and Advice provides articles, information and tips to help you quit smoking.

Electric cigarette reviews, alternative nicotine delivery, safer smoking advice.
