Using Your Will Power to Quit Smoking
Our society, specially in developed world, doesn’t favor smoking anymore. Cigarette advertisements aren’t allowed, smoking in public places is forbidden. It’s possible, in future smoking will be regarded as using illegal drugs.
Smoking may cause many health problems of some are fatal like lung cancer or heart attack. Actually you hear things like that everyday, everywhere. Even cigarette packages have notes about damages of smoking to health. Then why are there still so many people smoking? The answer is simple; Smoking is so addictive, it’s one of the hardest things to quit.
Cigarette contains nicotine. Nicotine has various properties. It’s a stimulant and an antidepressant. It’s generally accepted that what makes cigarette so appealing to many people is nicotine. As an antidepressant it eases dealing with daily problems. As a stimulant, when a pick up needed it may help. Nicotine is also beneficial for concentration. Many college students start smoking because of that.
But smoking must be more than just nicotine; The act of inhaling smoke full of countless harmful chemicals with joy then exhaling. There may even be subconscious factors playing role in smoking addiction. Even Sigmund Freud had to say ”Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar” implying role of subconscious factors at smoking.
There are many things you can do to quit smoking. Some try to quit in one day at all, some try to gradually quit. But result is, most times failure. It’s not so easy. Nicotine patches, therapy or other marketed methods are available but if someone really wants to quit smoking he must trust himself and look for the solution inside.
Basically it’s will power. You can try anything but if you don’t have a strong will, failure is a high possibility. Good news is will power can be improved. In his uncopyrighted book The Power of Concentration Theron Q. Dumont tells about an exercise to improve will power. ”Secure a package of playing cards. Select some time to do the exercise. Each day at the appointed time, take the pack in one hand and then start laying them down on top of each other just as slowly as you can, with an even motion. Try to get them as even as possible. Each card laid down should completely cover the under one”
Do this exercise 20 minutes daily for a month. This will improve your will power. Then quit smoking suddenly. Don’t forget first days are harder. Count everyday you haven’t smoked. Everyday is a success.
This is rather not well known approach to quit smoking. Beside its help regard to quitting addictions improving will power can be beneficial for you at many aspects of life like saving money or following a diet. In your way to self development it’s an important mile stone. This is a way that certainly must not include smoking and by improving will power you can quit that hamful addiction.
