DOGS

• Dogs that inhale secondhand smoke are three times more likely to develop lung or nasal cancer than dogs living in smoke-free homes.
• Dogs can experience allergic reactions to secondhand smoke. Common symptoms of this allergic reaction are the scratching, biting, and chewing of their skin. Owners often confuse this reaction with fleas or food allergies.
• Cigarette butts can also be deadly. Two butts, if eaten by a puppy, can cause death in a relatively short period of time.

BIRDS

• Birds can react badly to secondhand smoke and may develop eye problems, as well as other respiratory problems like coughing and wheezing.
• Birds that sit on a smoker’s hand can experience contact dermatitis from the nicotine that remains on the smoker’s hand. This can cause them to pull out their feathers.

CATS

FDA favors deadly drugs over safe alternatives

The FDA has finally acknowledged near 300 reports of suicide and attempted suicide that are linked to the smoking cessation drug Chantix.  The FDA announcement is 2 years overdue.  Chantix is a smoking cessation prescription medication marketed by Pfizer.  Pfizer clearly states on their website “Some people have had changes in behavior, hostility, agitation, depressed mood, suicidal thoughts or actions while using CHANTIX to help them quit smoking. Some people had these symptoms when they began taking CHANTIX, and others developed them after several weeks of treatment or after stopping CHANTIX.”1

Quitting smoking is difficult enough without the addition of mind altering drugs.  There are alternatives to help you either quit smoking, or smoke a healthier alternative.  The electronic cigarette could be your answer.

 The electronic cigarette is considered a “harm reduction alternative”.  The FDA has yet to prove electronic cigarettes as harmful, however they are using a fear campaign to sway public opinion of these potentially lifesaving devices.  An electronic cigarettes, also known as an e-cigarette, is tobacco and tar free.  An e-cigarette contains only 20 ingredients, none of which are carcinogenic.  Regular cigarettes contain 4,000 chemicals, many of which have been proven to be toxic.  The smoker draws on an e-cigarette, just like a regular cigarette.  Inside is pure nicotine held in a suspension of food safe additives.  The smoker inhales and blows out what looks like smoke, but is water vapor.  The smoker controls how much or how little nicotine he or she inhales by buying various strengths of e-cigarette cartridges.

As the FDA review of the problems with Chantix has continued, the FDA states that it appears increasingly likely that there is an association between Chantix and serious neuropsychiatric symptoms.

That patch went over in a blink of an eye! Back to the drafting board. The doctor importuned that the dose was correct. $50 down the drain. Decided to give the gum a shot, with around the same result. This was unquestionably not one of the better strategies to quit smoking, at least not for me.

Then I tried a quit smoking hypnosis seminar, which I attended with a like-minded friend. By the end of the 2 hour seminar, the thought of smoking a cigaret was anathema to me. It run! My pleasure at being so easily relieved from my insalubrious, compulsive habit was short-lived. My friend and I went to an outdoorsy coffee shop for lunch. As we finished, to my amazement, my friend lit up! Not only that, but she pulled out another one and said, “Oh, c’mon! One’s not going to hurt! C’mon!” Mayhap the hypnosis required time to settle into the unconscious. I took the smoke and that was that. I was very angry with her and myself.

So it’s easy to see that while the methodsand  paths to quit smoking are many, you need to do a little research and decide on which of those ways to quit smoking might work best for you. You can make this determination more easy by doing a little investigatory work. Do scary pictures of lung cancer x-rays gross you out? Google some images and tack them up above your desk for inspiration and motivation. How about an online quit smoking support group or forum? Browse a bookstall for a self-help book on ways to quit smoking. Eventually, you’ll find resources that motivate you.

Thus, you might be wondering as to what I found to be the most working strategies to quit smoking, for me: having found that the name-brand cigarettes contained anywhere from 500 to 1100 (!) chemicals, as well the nicotine, I converted to an all natural 100% baccy smoke. The withdrawal experienced was from the chemicals! Then I switched to herbal substitutes, which didn’t taste very well. Then I quit smoking altogether!
