If you have tried to stop smoking previously and failed you need to ask yourself “why did I fail?”. If you can identify the reasons you failed last time you can address these and work out a new plan of action where you will SUCCEED!

You should pick a date to actually stop, a little way off to give you time to prepare but not so far off that you lose interest. Then you should make a plan including the following:

Mark the date on your calendar, in your diary and put a sticker on the ‘fridge.

Tell friends and family about your Quit Day.

Get rid of the ashtrays in your home, car, and workplace and maybe use some air freshener or even shampoo your carpets, particularly in the car.

See your doctor for advice on what nicotine replacement therapy might be needed. Are you going to use nicotine patches, lozenges, sprays, chewing gum or even some prescribed medicines? He will help you decide on this depending on how long you have been smoking and how much you smoke.

Set up a support system to get you through the difficult withdrawal period. You might be able to enlist the help of your partner or a friend who can spend time with you and participate with you in activities and interests to keep your mind engaged. You will not have time to think about cigarettes if you are busy. In addition, or alternatively, you may want to join a local support group or National Health Service stop smoking program.

Practice saying, “No thanks, I don’t smoke.”

Stock up on some oral substitutes or comforters such as sugar free gum, carrot sticks, hard candy, cinnamon sticks, straws or tooth picks.

If your doctor has prescribed a medicine such as bupropion you should remember to start taking it as directed.

All these measures, once in place, will help you once the time to quit comes along

On that day do not dwell on the situation but instead take on a purposeful manner and think about the day ahead Try a new routine, perhaps a different breakfast followed by a different route to work. This will put you in the right frame of mind to change your habits. Through that first day you might want to follow these suggestions :

Do not smoke at all- not even one puff!

Keep busy and active. Try to take some exercise during the day even if it’s just a short walk. Minimise your coffee breaks if you are at work, and don’t hang out with colleagues who smoke.

Drink lots of water and juices through the day.

Do what is necessary as regards your nicotine replacement therapy.

Avoid places and situations where the urge to smoke can be strong.

Try to avoid alcohol.

Think about your favourite food for lunch and maybe even treat yourself to a nice lunch.

Try to avoid the rationalisations which creep in when you feel you may be weakening. You know the sort of thing – I’ll just have one to get me through this rough patch, or, today is not such a good day, I’ll start tomorrow.

When you get to the evening and you haven’t smoked you can congratulate yourself on your achievement. You can now relax with some music, or a good book or TV film to occupy your mind and then go to bed knowing that you can stop smoking and that tomorrow should be even easier, no longer will you be saying “I can’t stop smoking”.

There can be many different side effects when you are trying to quit smoking. Nicotine is an addiction that is often associated with drug withdrawal symptoms, and luckily these side effects don’t last very long. The important things is to try to get through the first week or two until the nicotine is totally out of your system.

One of the most common side effects associated with quitting smoking is depression. This is because of the withdrawal and it can be very severe for some people. This is caused by the cravings for nicotine. There are ways to stop depression. One of them is by focusing on the positive reasons you are quitting, and using them as a support through these times.

Another side effect associated with quitting smoking is that you will find that food will taste much better than it did when you were smoking. While this isn’t exactly a bad thing, you may be tempted to eat more, or even eat to try to replace having a cigarette in your mouth. Neither of these is a good idea, because eating too much, or the wrong types of foods can cause you to gain weight. This can cause its own set of health problems, but you can avoid this by sticking to a healthy meal plan. Instead of eating unhealthy snacks like chips or candy, you should eat healthier snacks like vegetables, and fruit instead. There also other healthy snacks like nuts and dried fruit you can eat as well.

Another common side effect of quitting smoking are headaches. This is caused because your brain has had nicotine removed, and just like drugs, is craving nicotine. You can alleviate this with some mild pain reliever like aspirin. It is important that you don’t light up, because you will be right back where you started. There are many different techniques you can use to help with any of these symptoms, and although the side effects may only last a few weeks, cravings can last for months or even years.

No matter what, if you truly want to succeed in your efforts, you have to change your habits. One of them is to stop hanging around people who smoke, don’t go into places that may still allow smoking. Heightened stress is another side effect of quitting smoking, and you need to find other ways to deal with stress. Because stress comes from many different sources, you won’t be able to quit your job, or get away from your kids, but you can use meditation and other methods to help you deal with stress better than smoking a cigarette.

There are an abundance of resources to help you out, both online, and from your healthcare provider. Just like any other addiction, you shouldn’t go it alone, and there are many support groups with people just like you that you can talk to. They can give you helpful tips and advice on what they have done to keep from smoking again, and you should utilize them whenever the craving comes up. Make sure that you do this before you light up, because afterward it is too late.

Cancer

Smokers are much more likely to develop some form of cancer than non-smokers. Ninety percent of lung cancer cases are caused by smoking. Smoking tobacco cigarettes can cause all sorts of cancers including mouth, stomach, oesophageal, bladder, kidney and pancreas cancer. At least half of smokers are eventually killed by their habit!

Lower Life Expectancy

Prepare to be shocked by this one. Smokers have an average life expectancy 10 years lower than non-smokers. 10 years! Life is short enough as it is. If this doesn’t make you seriously think twice, thrice and ten times about quitting smoking, we need to talk!

Emphysema

Emphysema is a chronic irreversible lung disease, primarily caused by tobacco smoking, which gradually destroys the lungs and is one of the most common causes of death from respiratory disease. In emphysema, the alveoli (air sacs) in the lungs become over-stretched, destroying the elasticity of fibers that open and close the air sacs during breathing. This results in the smoker having difficulty breathing normally, shortness of breath, difficulty exhaling and wheezing.

Heart Disease

Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death and illness in the UK. If you smoke, you have a higher risk of developing a blood clot leading to a heart attack. In fact, the majority of people who have a heart attack before the age of 50 are smokers. Smoking damages the lining of your arteries, leading to a build up of fatty material and a reduced blood flow. The carbon monoxide in cigarette smoke reduces the amount of oxygen that the blood can carry to your heart and body.

Bronchitis

Smoking causes Bronchitis. Bronchitis is an inflammation, or irritation of the air passages in the lungs. These airways are called the bronchial tubes, or the bronchi. When these bronchial tubes are irritated by chemicals released from tobacco smoke, thick mucus is formed in them. The mucus clogs up the air passages and obstructs the passage of air into the lungs. This causes bronchitis and can lead to chronic bronchitis. Symptoms of bronchitis include chronic coughing, breathlessness and tightness and pain in the chest.

If you really find it difficult to quit tobacco smoking because you are in the habit of having a cigarette in your hand, then you might like to explore a tobaccoless smoking alternative. Yes, it exists and in the form of an <noindex>electronic cigarette</noindex>. These are tobacco free and have none of the harmful chemicals of traditional tobacco smoking. They are little devices that look just like cigarettes and deliver a dose of nicotine. Check them out at <noindex>Vapour Lights</noindex>.

Most people know that smoking is bad for them but many don’t really understand just how bad it is. They know there are health risks but they push them to the back of their minds. If you are a smoker thinking, “well you’ve got to die of something haven’t you” or “it won’t happen to me” then you really should consider the facts and reasons to stop smoking.

A regular smoker is likely to have their life expectancy reduced by up to ten years. Do you really want to lose ten years of your life when you don’t have to? Coupled with this is the likely prospect that the latter few years of your life if you are a regular smoker are likely to be of poor quality due to some heart or lung disease that could have been avoided.

The adverse effects on one’s health through smoking are manifest in the lungs, the blood circulatory system and the heart. In the lungs the constant irritation of inhaled smoke causes damage leading to reduced lung capacity and bronchitis. The lining of the airways tends to lose its cilia, the little hair-like protuberances which help to clear them of mucous and contaminants so that infection in the lungs becomes more likely. Older people who are regular smokers are more likely to succumb to a bout of flu and a secondary infection because of damaged lungs.

The effect of nicotine on the blood vessels is to constrict them, and, since the small blood vessels that supply blood to the heart, are all ready narrow and may have been further narrowed by a build up of plaque (atherosclerosis) which is very common, the last thing you need is further narrowing and restriction of blood flow. Such further restriction can easily lead to arterial blockage and a heart attack.

These serious health risks should be enough in themselves to persuade you to give up smoking but if you are young you may dismiss all this as being too far into the future for you to worry about. If you not heed the advice and give up now though, you will surely regret it in the future.

If you need good reasons to stop smoking right now then there are both social and financial reasons that can affect you right now. Financially you can be surprisingly better off if you don’t buy cigarettes. Most smokers, like most drinkers, seriously underestimate the amount of money they spend on the habit. If you put aside the money you would have spent and save it for two to three months, you could have a sizeable sum – enough to buy a new bike or an Armani suit probably! Your lifestyle would have improved as, not only will you be feeing more fit and healthy but you will have more money in your pocket.

Smoking is generally becoming less and less socially acceptable. It is now banned in many public places including even pubs, once the safe haven for the inveterate smoker. You will not find ash trays in restaurants so much these days, let alone the workplace. You will feel like an outcast if you have to excuse yourself from a social gathering to nip out the back for a quick cigarette.

The anti-social aspect of smoking is heightened by the now recognised threat of passive smoking. People just don’t want to near smokers, especially in confined spaces and this has to be respected.

A smoker on a date should be aware of the possible consequences of bad breath or stained fingers from smoking. Along with hair and fingernails these are things that women tend to notice.

There are then, very good reasons to stop smoking. Quitting now will save you money, make you more socially successful and allow you to live longer. You know the reasons to quit- you must now make the decision to quit.

If you are not sure what exactly an electronic cigarette is, I will explain it right quick. For those who do know what they are, you can skip this paragraph. Electronic cigarettes or “e-Cigarettes” are just like traditional cigarettes without as many health hazards. They contain no tar, no pollution, no carbon monoxide, and no lit end but they do contain nicotine. They are a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes, cigars, or pipes and can be smoked just about anywhere. Whether you are at a restaurant, in an airplane, on a bus, or anywhere else that prohibits smoking in the area, you are able to enjoy e-cigarettes.

There are many benefits, when it comes to using electronic cigarettes. Here are 10 reasons why electronic cigarettes are better than traditional cigarettes:

10. There are a variety of flavors to choose from. You can choose from apple, strawberry, coffee, vanilla, mint/menthol, cherry, or many other different flavors. This is not including the traditional full flavors and strengths.

9. Better tasting than traditional cigarettes. Even when kissing a non-smoker, they don’t complain about how your mouth tastes like an ash tray. The vapors, which contain the nicotine, does not have the same after taste traditional cigarettes leave in your mouth or on your clothes. When you taste the vapors, it’s like a fresh taste and a fresher smell.

8. Not as messy as traditional cigarettes. No more worrying over ashes getting everywhere or messy cigarette butts laying around in your ash tray or flicking them out of the window. The cartridge, which is the filter part, snaps on and off. Each cartridge lasts about as long as 2 packs of traditional cigarettes. When you change the cartridge, you snap in a different cartridge and throw away the old one.

7. No one complaining about how your smoking habits are affecting them. Don’t you get tired of people saying “Can you move somewhere else? Your smoke is bothering me.”? Well, with electronic cigarettes, the smoke or vapors you exhale smell very pleasant, compared to traditional cigarettes. So, no more worries of people complaining about your habbits anymore.

6. The ability to smoke anywhere such as stores, planes, work places, and many other areas. You are able to smoke electronic cigarettes just about anywhere. I would advise you to mention to the store owner, a manager, or a co-worker, before you do e-smoke though. I wouldn’t want someone getting arrested or kicked out of a place for someone thinking you were actually smoking.

5. No lit end to set fires. No more worries of dropping your cigarette in your car and burn a hole in the floor, or tossing your cigarette out of the window and see it catch something on fire.

4. Cheaper than traditional cigarettes. With cigarette prices, these days, going up in price everyday. Stop paying $50 or more for a carton of cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes cost half that price or less. You can buy a carton of cartridges for about $17 to around $25 and they last just as long. So, you can get about 2 cartons of electronic cigarettes for the same price as one carton of traditional cigarettes.

3. No worries of second-hand smoke. The vapors given off by electronic cigarettes are basically just water vapors with nicotine in them. There is no carbon monoxide found within the vapor, which is better health wise, too.

2. Less health hazards. As stated on the previous reason, electronic cigarettes do not contain any form of carbon monoxide. Also, there is no burning paper fumes going inside of your lungs, either. Although, electronic cigarettes are not healthy or great for your health, they are a better alternative than traditional cigarettes.

1. Better for your health. I’m not saying they are completely safe or healthy but they are a safer alternative.

Electronic cigarettes help you in many ways. You can use them as either a safer way to smoke everyday and anywhere, if you would like to keep smoking, or you can use them to quit smoking. If you choose to quit smoking by using the electronic cigarettes method, my advance to you would be to purchase the same milligram (MG) equal to your current cigarette brand. By this, I mean if you are smoking Full Flavor Marlboro cigarettes, you choose the 16MG cartridges. Once it’s time to buy refills, go to the next lowest MG available and work your way backwards, until you reach the non-nicotine cartridges. Once you are at the non-nicotine cartridges, you can either lay down the electronic cigarette or if you still have that urge of wanting to smoke one, the non-nicotine cartridges are safe enough to use, in order to take away that loss feeling.

In my own personal thoughts about electronic cigarettes, I found them to be a lot more refreshing than traditional cigarettes. I chose to go with the company called “Blu” and bought my starter kit for $59. When they came in the mail, I couldn’t wait to try it out to see what it tasted like. The electronic cigarette, itself, was quiet heavy because of the battery, that is inside of them. When I took the first puff or pull off of the cartridge filter and inhaled, I was quiet amazed. It did not have a bland taste to them or anything nasty tasting. I chose to go with the menthol flavor, since I’m used to smoking Newports. Compared to them, they were actually better tasting and had a fresher feeling to them.

As the time went by, I never had a craving to go back to traditional cigarettes and I have told so many of my smoking friends about the electronic cigarettes and had my friends try a pull off mine. They were so impressed that they ended up buying a starter kit, as well. So, everyone I know is “e-smoking” and it’s so nice. I will never switch back to traditional cigarettes.

Were you aware that coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. and the leading cause of death caused by smoking? It’s true. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services smoking and heart disease are strongly related. Smoking is hard on the heart, and the toxins in cigarette smoke cause plaques to form in your arteries, which leads to atherosclerosis, otherwise known as hardening of the arteries.

Atherosclerosis is a progressive hardening of the arteries caused by the deposit of fatty plaques and the scarring and thickening of the artery wall. Inflammation of the artery wall and the development of blood clots can obstruct the flow of blood to the heart and cause heart attacks or strokes.

Cigarette smoking has been associated with sudden cardiac death of all types in both men and women.

Smoking-related coronary heart disease may contribute to congestive heart failure.

Serious consequences arise from smoking cigarettes. My mother smoked most of her life. I lost her just recently and I miss her. Not to lung disease or lung cancer or anything to do with her lungs but to heart disease.

Most people that have smoked for a long time think that smoking is only affecting their lungs. Well, I am here to tell you, that is not the case. I tried and tried to get her to quit but she would always have some reason why she couldn’t. One of the reasons she used was, “I get an x-ray of my lungs every year and it shows nothing wrong.” “I am smoking the lowest tar and nicotine cigarettes available.”

She came to visit us in Nevada in August. She lived in Florida. When she was here on her last visit she said something very peculiar. She said, “Honey, I never knew that smoking affected your heart. I knew it affected my lungs, but not my heart.” I didn’t understand at the time what she was trying not to say. She had just retired. She and my father had plans. She went home and was gone in September. She died of a severe heart attack.

There are so many smokers who do not realize all the damage they are causing in their body and the life they are squandering to cigarettes. Hopefully, this article will enlighten you. I wish my mother would have read an article like this before it was too late. Smoking and heart disease do go hand in hand.

There are many good reasons to quit smoking these days, both health benefits, and the fact that more and more states are banning smoking from not only restaurants and bars, but also from many public places. For whatever reasons you have to quit, there are an abundance of methods to help you quit. The real problem with quitting your habit, is that it is one of the worst addictions, and in most cases, even worse than drugs or alcohol. Nicotine addiction is considered worse than even a heroine addiction in most cases.

One of the problems with quitting smoking is the side effects and withdraw symptoms associated with it. The longer you have been a smoker, the worse it often is, and that is why so many people fail at least once before finally kicking the habit. Smoking has been a way out for many people who have stressful jobs, problems, at home etc. If you get stressed out, you smoke a cigarette. You may smoke after a meal, or as soon as you get up in the morning. Smokers who drink alcohol often smoke much more than when they aren’t drinking, and many see drinking and smoking go hand in hand.

If you are serious about quitting smoking, there is help for withdrawal symptoms. There are lozenges, patches and pills that help to slowly reduce the amount of nicotine in your body. These can help you with the physical effects of withdrawal. In order to really stop smoking you also need to change your habits as well. If you have friends that are still smoking, you should stop hanging around them all the time, because just having it around you can trigger cravings, and you are still smoking, by second hand smoke.

If your friends can’t understand that you aren’t hanging around them in order to be sure you don’t smoke again, maybe you need different friends. A true friend will figure out ways to hang out with you without smoking, like just refraining while you are with them. Maybe it is time for them to also stop smoking, and maybe you can help them quit the habit. It is important for people with addictions, whether it is from smoking or drugs or alcohol to have some kind of support group, where you can talk with others who have also quit smoking.

Another problem with dealing with the side effects of quitting smoking is stress. For many years you may have used smoking as a way to relieve stress, no matter where it originates from. You need to figure out different ways to alleviate your stress levels. One of the ways to reduce stress in your life is through meditation, deep breathing exercises and many other techniques. It may mean that you have to use a variety of different methods until you find one that works, or a combination of things.

No matter what your particular side effects are, know this. One, you are not alone, in both your desires to quit, and the problems and side effects related to quitting smoking. Two, these withdraw symptoms won’t last forever, and in most cases are completely out of your system within a few months. No matter kinds of side effects you are having, remember the personal reasons you are quitting, and use those to your advantage.

Perhaps you may know that quitting smoking brings great benefits but you may be not be aware how much it brings much benefit and greatly improve your life and health despite the amount of years you’ve been smoking.

So it doesn’t matter whether you’ve been smoking for 1, 3, 10, or 30 years. Your body will experience healing as soon as you cease to smoke. In facts your body will start to heal by itself as soon as you stop smoking for the last 20 minutes.

Below is the breakdown of the benefits that you will experience after you’ve stop smoking.

Time after You’ve Stopped Smoking and Benefits Your Body Will Experience

20 Minutes – Pulse rate and blood pressure returns to normal.

8 Hours – The level of carbon monoxide in your body drops and the level of oxygen in your blood increases.

24 Hours – Chance of heart attack reduces.

48 Hours – Nerve endings regenerates and food smells and tastes better.

72 Hours – Breathing becomes easier as bronchial tubes relax.

2 Weeks to 3 Months – Decrease of tiredness, shortness of breath, coughing, congestion, energy increases and walking and exercising becomes easier.

1 Month to 9 Months – Cilia in the lungs regenerates. Reduction in the shortness of breath.

1 Year – Risk of heart disease decrease by 50% compared to a smoker.

5 Years – Risk of lung cancer decrease by 50%.

10 Years to 15 Years – Regeneration and replacement of pre-cancerous cells. Same health risks of a non-smoker.

Other Benefits of Quit Smoking

More than just health, quitting smoking includes other benefits as well. I’d say that regaining control of your life would be the main one. On top of that you’ll definitely save a bulk of cash and setting a better example to your family and your community.

Ask any ex-smoker about their journey and their benefits and it’s not surprising that you may them say they have a sense of pride and accomplishment, being more positive and productive at work, improved appetite, having better relationships with people, increased energy levels, better appearance, better attraction and the list goes on.

Here’s what you can do, come up with a list of reasons to quit smoking. Think for a moment. What are all the possible benefits, including short term and long term benefits you will experience when you decide to quit smoking.

The more detailed and more specific, the better. Include how you feel about yourself and how you will feel if you’ve succeeded to quit smoking. The clearer you are about your reason, the more focus you will be about quitting.

Tony James is an ex-smoker for 11 years and is currently helping smokers to quit smoking with ease without irritation, discomfort of cravings or withdrawal symptoms.

Many people say that quitting cold turkey is one of the most difficult ways to quit smoking. They may be right, but not for the reasons that they think.

A lot of what factors into successfully quitting smoking is attitude. If you think from the beginning that it won’t work, chances are that it’s going to fail. If you’ve tried to quit before, think back to when it stopped working: when you told yourself that you’d tried going about it wrong, or that just one cigarette wasn’t going to really hurt.

Nothing changed except your attitude. The physical withdrawal that everybody complains about didn’t get any worse or better, you just made a conscious decision that you weren’t going to keep working on this quitting thing.

This is the main reason why quitting cold turkey is considered hard: because people get into it thinking that it’s hard, so as soon as it gets a little difficult, they use that as an excuse to give up.

Don’t feel that this reflects poorly on you though, this is the same reason why so many thousands of other people have failed at quitting cold turkey.

The trick to quitting cold turkey without any problems is to go into it with the mindset that, hey, this is going to be outrageously easy. You have to know that you’re going to succeed before you even start. This isn’t as difficult as it seems. There are a number of guides available online to show you how to do this.
