County offers resources to quit

With January came New Year’s resolutions and a new smoking ban in restaurants and bars. Residents who have been inspired to stop smoking can turn to the health department for resources to quit.

When people come to the health department with questions about how to quit smoking, workers can provide them with brochures, Web sites, and helplines.

“It’s important for the health of everybody,” said Donna Parks, tobacco free coordinator for the Surry County Health and Nutrition Center.

Parks said she frequently refers people to QuitlineNC, which has a phone line and Web site. Those who want help to quit smoking can call 1-800-QUIT-NOW, a free and confidential service that offers one-on-one support. The line is funded by the NC Health and Wellness Trust Fund and the NC Department of Health and Human Services.

With the quit line, each caller gets paired with a coach who helps him or her create a plan for quitting. People can call the line as frequently as they need to for help. The line is open from 8 a.m. to 3 a.m., seven days a week. The Web site, quitlinenc.com, also provides resources.

Parks said, “The best thing they can probably do is call (the health center) for information, call the quit line, or look at the Web site.”

The Surry County Health and Nutrition Center also offers smoking cessation classes upon request for a fee. Parks said there has to be a group of people for the class. Many businesses partner with the health center to offer the class.

The smoking cessation classes usually take place once a week for four weeks. The instructors use the Fresh Start program from the American Cancer Society (ACS). The ACS Web site, www.cancer.org, also provides tips to quit smoking.

Mothers that come to the health center can receive one-on-one counseling to quit smoking. For those with health insurance, many insurance companies will pay for someone to quit smoking. People need to check with their providers to see if this option is available.

People who are interested in quitting smoking can try several different methods. Parks said they can set a date by which time they want to quit, they can taper off gradually, or quit cold turkey.

“The person has to be ready to quit,” Parks advised.

She also teaches people in the cessation class to find out what their triggers are. For example, if a person smokes a cigarette every time he or she drinks a cup of coffee, then coffee would be a trigger for that person.

The most recent set of data from the North Carolina Tobacco Prevention and Control Branch, a 2007 report, showed that 30.3 percent of adults in Surry County smoke cigarettes and 22.5 percent of women smoke while pregnant. Also, 57.6 percent of high school and 32.9 percent of middle school students in the region had tried a tobacco product. The report said that 54 percent of adult tobacco users in Surry and surrounding counties made a serious quit attempt in 2005.

Parks said, “Surry County, because there have been a large number of tobacco growers, I would say it is a little bit higher of a rate than others.”

She hopes the new smoking ban in restaurants and bars will encourage more people to quit smoking.

“It’s a good start anyway,” Parks said.

To promote the new smoking ban, the health department has been visiting a different restaurant each Tuesday. Parks said “Tasty Tuesday” has gone well so far, and good crowds have turned out. Health department employees will be at The Coffee House in Elkin on Jan. 19 and at Cousin Gary’s in Pilot Mountain on Jan. 26 from 12 to 2 p.m. each time. They will be handing out free giveaways and educational materials and answering customers’ questions about the new law that went into effect on Jan. 2.

Quit Smoking in 2010 with Smokeless Cigarettes

Of all the stop smoking aids that have been marketed throughout the years, the most intriguing, and possibly most effective, is the electronic cigarette (also known as the e-cigarette or smokeless cigarette). At first glance, this device appears to be a real cigarette in size, weight, and usage. However, since it does not contain tobacco, its operation does not expose the smoker to the over 4000 toxic chemicals and 60-70 known carcinogens found in traditional cigarettes.

Electronic Cigarettes as a Stop Smoking Aid

So, how do these “fake cigarettes” help people stop smoking? In several ways, actually. First of all, they contain a cartridge that, upon inhaling, generates the taste of a traditional tobacco cigarette. Different manufacturers offer a wide variety of flavors (tobacco, menthol, and even options like apple, strawberry, and chocolate, to name a few), and users should try out a few different brands and varieties to see which ones are the most pleasing to them personally.

If desired, smokeless cigarettes can also be used as nicotine delivery system. When choosing the cartridges to be used in your electric cigarette, you can specify a nicotine level of high, medium, low, or none. This makes the electronic cigarette a true “quit smoking cigarette,” since you can start at a higher nicotine level, and gradually reduce your nicotine intake, just like you can with other stop smoking aids such as the nicotine patch.

Next, the physical actions required in smoking electronic cigarettes are identical to those used to operate a regular cigarette, thus giving the smoker something to do with their hands. This is perhaps one of the most cited reasons for failure when attempting other quit smoking methods; nicotine gum or patches do nothing to replace the physical routines and habits involved in smoking addiction.

E-Cigarettes Allowed Where Smoking Is Banned

Finally, since they do not emit actual smoke, the use of electric cigarettes is allowed in places traditional cigarettes have been banned: restaurants and bars, theaters, workplaces, sporting venues, cruise ships, and more. You see, e-cigarettes expel a water vapor that looks and tastes like smoke, but it virtually odorless and dissipates into the air almost immediately. This is due to the electronic cigarette’s atomization chamber, that heats up the liquid contained in the cartridge and produces a vapor that gives the user the physical sensation of smoking, but without the harsh smoke and irritation of traditional tobacco.

Make Sure to Try Before You Buy

I’m sure you’ve noticed the multitude of brands and varieties of tobacco cigarettes on the market – there are literally hundreds to choose from, and each smoker has his or her own specific favorite. Now that smokeless cigarettes have evolved on the market, the situation is no different. Each brand and style of electric cigarette will be different from the next in ways such as taste, feel, usage, and convenience (carrying, charging, refills, etc.). That’s why many electronic cigarette manufacturers give you the opportunity to take advantage of a risk-free trial of their product before you commit to spending the $100 or so that it takes to purchase a complete kit.

For a small shipping and handling charge, usually between $2-8, you can receive an e-cigarette starter kit that contains everything you need to try the product out for yourself. You will be given a period of time, generally 10 days or so, to use the electric cigarettes at no risk, and see if you are satisfied with your choice. If you wish to keep your smokeless cigarette kit past the trial period, simply do nothing and you will be billed for the total cost of your purchase. If you are not completely happy, just follow the enclosed instructions to contact the company and return the unused portion of the product. Some companies will even allow you to extend the length of your trial period if you need a bit more time to decide.

So stick with those New Year’s resolutions and make 2010 the year you give up smoking traditional tobacco cigarettes for good!

Quitting cold turkey for 2010

So another year and with it another resolution to quit your cigarette habit. The beginning of the year is always a good time to decide to quit as there are many people who are in the same boat wishing to stop their nicotine addiction. It’s a great time to find someone else to quit so you can encourage each to stay quit for longer. Most people that quit will try to quit cold turkey.

Cold turkey is basically stopping with no aid, just making up your mind to do it and quit. Two of the most common problems when quitting cold turkey are severe dry mouth and headaches.  Combating both these problems is not difficult and all you should do is treat it in a way as if it wasn’t related to cigarettes. For dry mouth keep yourself hydrated. Sucking on sweets and drinking thick pulp juices keeps the mouth hydrated much longer than water. For a headache all you need to do is to take a headache tablet.

Another point to remember is out of sight is out of mind. By ridding your house and work environment of anything or everything to do with cigarettes will help. Don’t even keep your ashtrays and lighters. Try to avoid places where cigarettes are bought. You would be surprised at how easy you could find yourself with a cigarette in your mouth before realizing that you are trying to quit.

If you do manage to light up another cigarette don’t just give up on quitting but start the whole procedure over again. That means destroying any cigarettes and smoking aid that you have purchased. The main thing to remember is that you want to quit so keep trying. Even if you have to resolve to take patches or gum, it will be a lot better than starting to smoke again.

This quitting cold turkey article was written by David Kimberley the owner of the website www.goingcoldturkey.com. It is a resource website for people trying to find information on quitting smoking cold turkey.

Quit Cold Turkey Smoking

Smoking is a bad habit because it makes you unhealthy and can kill you over time. What if it didn’t?

Welcome!

We know all about the wonderful affects of smoking already don’t we? I mean we see them on TV, our kids come home from school and tell us, even our best friends, and other family members have told us how much they hate that we smoke.

So, quit cold turkey smoking seems to be the best thing for us. BUT, how many people can actually do this? I mean, I have tried about 20 different times, and every time I start off so strong only to fall right back into this fatal choice once again!

What is the solution here people?

I am sure if you think real hard you can see it, I bet that you have thought of it many times before and you just don’t remember.

What is it?

KEEP SMOKING! I am sorry if I am confusing you, that is not the point!

YOU KEEP SMOKING CIGARETTES JUST START SMOKING CIGARETTES THAT WON’T KILL YOU!

Ok, not that I have clicked my caps lock off… Here is what I am trying to say.

About a few months back, I decided that I wanted to start my new years resolution a little early! I was sick of everyone telling me to quit cold turkey smoking, and this was beginning to really affect my life! I don’t know about you, but all of my friends and family didn’t want me around because well, some of them had already quit and it really hurt them to be around someone that still smokes.

So I was a little bit motivated to start looking for a solution so that I could quit cold turkey smoking cigarettes. It took me a while to decide what I was going to do to help me when I found what I am about to show you.

Electronic cigarettes that are actually made to help slowly take the need to smoke, while you get to keep smoking. These are pretty new I guess, although I had heard of people trying them and thinking that they weren’t very good. But these were nothing like that!

Here’s the deal, I decided to give them a try, I had read all about them, watched some videos on there website, and really figured I had figured out.

So I ordered them, and what I got was AMAZING. When you smoke you mainly are doing it because you want your fix, so it was awesome to get that same fix from a cigarette that wasn’t making me slowly die! I started feeling better, I didn’t need to smoke as much, things in my house stopped smelling like cigarette smoke! Quit cold turkey smoking was actually a lot easier to do when I found the RIGHT solution.

So, I am happy to say, I am still a smoker, I am healthier, I have more money now because electronic cigarettes don’t cost much after your first purchase.. ( you have to buy them, but once you do, you just need the nicotine) and you save tons of money on cigarettes!

Now, it is like I quit cold turkey smoking, but I still get to smoke. It is a pretty wonderful thing.

My New Years Resolution And Electronic Cigarettes

Every year millions of people all over the world make New Years Resolutions, but an awful lot of those promises are broken pretty soon. The most popular resolutions are to stop smoking or lose weight, both difficult to do in their own way. This year I will be making an Old Years resolutions and this is:

To carry on giving up smoking and never put one of those disgusting, addictive, foul smelling, cancerous things in my mouth ever again.

There I’ve said it. Do you know how much it means to me and anybody else who manages to stop smoking to be able to say that and know that this time you really mean it? When you watch TV programmes like the X Factor or Strictly Come Dancing the contestestants always seem to say that winning means the world to them. Well in the real world stopping smoking truly can mean the world to you when you have smoked for many years.

I started when I was 14, it was easy to buy separates from corner shops and then graduate to packs of 5 Park Drive if you got some extra spending money or had a pal to share the cost with. Back then in the 60s it was cool to smoke, the height of sophistication if you were an impressionable teenager. We just didn’t know the health risks that went hand in hand with looking sophisticated to our peers.

Then the health risks became known but when you are addicted your needs overcome what is good for you. It is hard to stop smoking, very hard for most of us nicotine addicts. Every now and then you try to stop but more often than not you weaken and start smoking again. You create a pattern until eventually you manage to break that pattern and stop – that is if you don’t die from smoking related illnesses first.

I will be ending the old and starting the new year as a non smoker and that will be for the first time in 40 years. I won’t have a smokers cough or get out of breath while I am partying. Those who I give a new years hug or kiss to will smell Opium perfume on me and not be repulsed by the disgusting ashtray smell. I won’t have to go outside in the cold with the other outcasts who share the horrible habit and I can brag about how much money I have saved.

Very important to me and the main reason that I stopped back in May is a massive improvement in my circulation. Last winter I suffered from a lot of excruciating pain in my fingers from Reynards disease. At times it was frightening because there was no circulation in my fingers and it was difficult to get my fingers warm enough to get the blood flowing again.

As I work in a shop that sells chilled and frozen products I couldn’t always keep my fingers warm and they and my livelihood were at risk. Now that I don’t smoke those problems have lessened to such an extent that it is just an occasional minor nuisance now. Sometimes it was too painful to use my computer keyboard but now there isn’t a problem.

For those of you who despair of ever giving up smoking my story is proof that eventually you can stop. With my weak willpower it took a lot of attempts using different methods to stop but eventually I found the way that works best for me and that was electronic cigarettes. I used them to gradually get rid of my nicotine addiction and I don’t smoke anything now – nor am I addicted to anything.

One of the things that I did to help myself was to build a blog and keep an online diary. Knowing that other people would be watching how I did strengthened my resolve and my diary will always be there to stop me from slipping
