New Advances in Peripheral Neuropathy Treatments Give Patients Hope

Denver, CO (PRWEB) February 15, 2012
Peripheral neuropathy (PN) affects at least 20 million people in the United States. Nearly 60% of all people with diabetes suffer from peripheral neuropathy, according to National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Peripheral neuropathy can cause people to fall more often. Falls are a large percentage of fatal home accidents and have been increasing over the years. More than 86% of the victims of a fall are 65 years old or older. Sometimes a fall can cause serious problems like a broken hip (which can be fatal). PN is damage to the nerves of the peripheral nervous system and can be an extremely painful disease. Many people who suffer from PN exhibit symptoms like stabbing pain, tingling, numbness, cold or burning feet and hands.
For many, PN pain affects their lives in a profound way. Some experience pain like electric or stabbing sensations all of the time, disturbed sleeping patterns, Restless Leg Syndrome, fatigue, depression, numbness and tingling in the toes, or pain in the legs when they walk. The pain PN patients feel can either be constant or periodic, but usually the pain is felt equally on both sides of the body. The symptoms of peripheral neuropathy may depend on which of the three types of peripheral nerves (motor, sensory or autonomic) have been damaged. Some neuropathies even affect all three types of nerves, while others involve only one or two.
Some types of PN develop suddenly, while others progress more slowly over many years. One of the most common complaints of PN pain patients is that they become hopeless. According to Dr. Josh Johnston, of Vitality Health Center Denver, ?Patients? care often hasn’t worked and their doctors tell them they ?will just have to live with it?. This may no longer have to be true. Though, it may be an issue when peripheral neuropathy patients have reached a point where they have accepted everyone’s opinions, including those doctors that told patients to ?live with your pain??.
Many sufferers of PN can have hope because recently there have been amazing advances in the care of these conditions, and perhaps these new therapies may end sufferers’ foot and leg pain nightmare permanently. The sad truth is that most doctors don’t have a thorough understanding of PN pain. Therefore, they just treat the symptoms, but never get to the actual cause of the problem which is decreased nerve fiber density in the damaged area. There are many routines and procedures that a PN patient can do at home to help alleviate the symptoms and help deal with the day-to-day pain and discomfort: check your feet daily for blisters or cuts, quit smoking, eat healthy meals, drink alcohol in moderations, massage your hands and feet to improve circulation, and avoid prolonged pressures. This is great advice for those who suffer from mild or moderate neuropathy, but those who are suffering from severe PN need to find more scientific treatment options right away, ideally those that can regenerate the nerve fibers themselves.
Treatment options for more serious sufferers include the innovative non-invasive, non-drug, non-surgical treatment program that includes neuropathy biophotomodulation treatment combined with very specific neurological reintegration and stimulation protocols of peripheral nerves to increase their function quickly, and PEMF therapy as seen and promoted by Dr. Oz. By using the best of modern technology from America and Europe, these proven and effective therapies not only can provide significant relief, but they have also been documented to allow for more nerve regeneration. Most lay people, as well as doctors, are not aware of these new therapies that can reverse the damage and pain of peripheral neuropathy. Dr. Johnston states, ?A recent national survey revealed a 90.1% satisfaction rate from the patients receiving the care. Some of their pain even eliminated or reduced after just one treatment.?
